Vision Transformers (ViTs) and BEV (Bird's Eye View) multi-camera architectures have become standard in automotive perception, replacing conventional convolutional networks. However, large attention matrices remain prone to catastrophic misclassification when confronted with adversarial camouflage, extreme lens glare, or bizarre road obstacles. In this article, we explain how to build a dedicated, certifiable safety wrapper around large AI vision models.
In a Vision Transformer, clear inputs cause the attention heads to focus sharply on semantic features: headlights, bumper edges, and lane markings. Under extreme out-of-distribution conditions like lens mud splatters or thick fog, attention weights spread uniformly across all tokens, causing the Shannon entropy of the attention distribution to spike. The safety wrapper monitors attention entropy across the final transformer blocks: if entropy exceeds 4.2 nats, perception confidence is marked invalid.
